A GPS medical alert device is an all-in-one wearable - about the size of a large watch face - with a built-in cellular radio, GPS chip, speaker, and microphone. It works anywhere in Canada that has cellular coverage, which for most of the country is virtually everywhere outside of remote wilderness areas.

When the button is pressed, the device connects to a monitoring centre over the cellular network, just like a phone call. Because the device is self-contained, there's no base station - your parent wears it everywhere, including outside the home.

GPS devices also allow family members to check their parent's location in real time through a companion mobile app, which many families find reassuring - particularly for parents with early cognitive decline who may wander.

The tradeoff: GPS devices cost slightly more (starting around $39/month), and they need to be charged every one to two days, similar to a smartphone. For seniors who forget to charge things, this can be a barrier.

Which Should You Choose?

For a parent who is mostly homebound - who moves around the house, tends the garden, and doesn't venture far - an in-home system is usually the right choice. It's reliable, affordable, requires no charging, and covers everything they need.

For an active parent who still drives, visits friends, goes to appointments, or travels - a GPS device is the better fit. The peace of mind of coverage everywhere outweighs the extra cost and charging requirement.

For parents with dementia or cognitive decline, GPS tracking is strongly recommended regardless of activity level, as the location-sharing feature provides an important safety net for family members.

Many families also choose to combine both: an in-home system for everyday home use and a GPS device that comes out for appointments and outings.
